Dark Chocolate and Raspberries Releasing Today with Extasy Books!

Greetings Loved Ones!

I am happy to announce the release of Dark Chocolate and Raspberries with Extasy Books!

Its taken a while to find a new home for my work and I know many of you are more familiar with my paranormal stories than my m/m contemporary romance. But I got started by writing m/m contemporary romance before I ever sold my first paranormal novel. Dark Chocolate and Raspberries wasn't the first, but it is one of my absolute favorites. It tells a story of masks. How the persona we put on for the general public, if nobody cares to look deeper, rarely is the person we really are deep inside.

These young men have dealt with and are still dealing with adversity in their lives. While trying to discover who they are and create a future for themselves, they are dealing with a past full of hidden mysteries and misunderstandings. There are so many times in our lives that our point of view colors our understanding of what is going on around us, and so too in this story Dylan and Taj each have their own point of view of the events of a past they must discover together. Of course, they do this among a cast of college characters who are all just trying to find their place in the world and have fun while they're doing it.

[On a side note - the game Raspberries - is completely fictitious. Nobody I know would ever do anything like that. I never drank before I was legally 21 years old. I never kissed boys in closets. I never played spin the bottle. I never kissed girls in closets. I never did anything I wasn't suppose to. I was a virgin before I was married. (And if you believe all that I'm sure there's a bridge somewhere I can sell ya dirt cheap!)]

So now that I'm completely off topic... Dark Chocolate and Raspberries... LOL!

Coming of age has never been so sweet.

18-year-old Dylan’s talent for music almost equals his diva persona. Everyone knows Dylan enjoys pushing people around, but does he really? When Taj is charged with taking Dylan under his wing, he discovers the shy boy behind the diva mask.

When Dylan walks in on Taj kissing Ben, their budding feelings may not be able to withstand the blow. Stunned, Dylan runs from the room. Taj gives chase, trying to catch him to tell him the kiss he saw was the result of a game played in the dorm called Raspberries. Will their love blossom into kisses, drown in drunken chocolates, or erupt in raucous raspberries in Dark Chocolate and Raspberries?

Excerpt:

Taj headed slowly down the hallway towards his room. Dylan had sparked his interest and fascinated him all day. Dylan had watched Taj’s every move, listening attentively to everything he’d said. Taj had found the intense observation unsettling at first; he hadn’t been scrutinized so closely in a long time. Every time he’d glanced at the young man, Dylan had been staring at him, watching, almost waiting for something.

The real Dylan, the shy, quiet, careful young man, was a surprise, and so unlike what Taj had expected. He’d spoken very little, seeming to prefer to listen and watch everything going on around him intently. Most performers Taj had known were outgoing and gregarious, striving for more attention and flourishing in the spotlight. Dylan’s diva pose screamed extrovert, but when pushed, the persona folded and the real Dylan appeared, so timid Taj wouldn’t have believed him to be the same person. He wondered which one would be coming to dinner, the diva or the speechless freshman.

College often changed people; they would grow and develop. Maybe away from those who expected him to behave like a spoiled brat, the façade would fade and Dylan’s real personality could mature and flourish. Taj found Dylan fascinating. His silent attentiveness made Taj wonder what went on beneath the surface, in the depths of those deep brown eyes, eyes the color of dark chocolate.

Taj felt a challenge in Dylan he found hard to define. The diva screamed catch me if you can, and something in Taj intensely hoped to see him cry, yet at the same time Taj wanted to protect the shy, attentive young man. He had no idea how to reconcile such conflicting feelings towards one person, but maybe if he got to know Dylan, he’d learn.

The door to his room hung open to the hall; as he approached, he could hear boisterous laughter and recognized the voices of his friends. They were scattered about the room, already engaged in their favorite pastime, Raspberries.

“Go…Go…Go!” they chanted.

Taj stood in the door and watched. Justin leaned over to Paul, lifted his shirt, and blew a raspberry against his bare stomach. A fresh bout of laughter broke loose and Taj joined them. Justin stood and gasped for air, Paul yanked his shirt back down over his bare stomach, squirming and shivering uncontrollably, shoving Justin away.

“God damn! That always gives me goose bumps.” Paul quivered all over. “Ehhh—” he shivered and rubbed his hands up and down, over his arms.

“I want to play!” Taj slapped Paul on the back in greeting.

“Okay, since you’re late, you spin.” Paul nodded towards the desk.

Taj dumped his bag on his bed and leaned over. There sat a game spinner, divided into nine sections decorated in three colors; red, brown, and purple. Grinning, Taj flicked the pointer, spinning it rapidly around to slow and finally stop on red.

A couple of the guys ooh’d, while Tom wolf- whistled. Taj abruptly grabbed Paul’s head and planted a kiss firmly on his lips while the rest of the guys hooted and hollered.

“Tom, you’re next since you’re making the most fuss.” Taj jeered and passed the spinner to Tom.

Greetings Loved Ones!

Things are definitely on a positive turn. Two of my individual titles have been picked up by eXtasy Books! I'm so excited because there are quite a few wonderful author friends of mine who write for this particular press and have spoken so highly of them. It encourages me to really get on the ball and get writing. As it turns out, Not Only have they taken on two of my previously published stories, but will also be printing two of the stories I'm in the process of completing.

So, on May 15, 2013 Stone Heart, will be released by eXtasy Books and will soon be followed by Dark Chocolate and Raspberries on June1, 2013. I can't wait to see what they come up with for covers!

These two stories are a couple of my favorites. Dark Chocolate and Raspberries is one of the very few M/M Contemporary Romances I've written. Stone Heart is a M/M Dark Fantasy I wrote around my love of gargoyles!

The two new stories you will be able to find at eXtasy in a couple of months (considering I need to get to writing and finish them) will be Light in the Dark, which is my first M/M Science Fiction Romance. The other is Downtown Bus, which began as a series of flash fiction stories on my blog last year. It's since been rewritten to flow a bit more smoothly, but remains unfinished at this time. Once they are finished, I will get their pages up and give you more information about each of them.

I know ... stop gabbing and start writing! Well I'm working on it!

Wishing you Love and Butterflies,

Sui Lynn~~

Greetings Kool Queer Lit Readers,

Thank you for having me at Kool Queer Lit.com!

I hope everyone is doing well. I'm Sui Lynn and I'm happy to be here celebrating Man Love month at Kool Queer Lit. I don't mind telling you that I truly love men. The tall, dark and handsome, strong, silent and brooding, short, blond and fun-loving... it really doesn't matter the stereotypical or the odd man out, makes no difference to me. They all have deserve to have love in their lives, no matter how tormented their past or how perfect their childhoods.

I've been asked why I write M/M. And to be honest it's simply because I enjoy M/M fiction.

I've been writing for myself for years. Mainly as a way to express the emotions in my life. Not that the stories I wrote reflected in any way to my life or had any of the people in my life, in the stories. I read and write for relaxation and stress relief. Other people may play racquetball or do needle point. I make up imaginary characters and write down whatever they tell me about their lives.

The infatuation with M/M stories is a more recent development. An artist friend introduced me to Anime and I discovered Yaoi. From there, I discovered M/M romance. I began to tell my friend about what I was reading and we got into a discussion... the usual discussion of whether a female writer could truly write male love. Next thing I knew we had a bet between the two of us, she saying I couldn't and I saying I could. Heck if Stephen King can write Horror without being being bars for having to act them out first before he could know the mind of his killers, I could write gay fantasy romance. About six months later, I submitted my first story and Blue Rose was published with Dreamspinner Press. Since then, many characters have been gracing the pages of my rough drafts, flash fictions and actual published works.  And I love all the new men in my imaginary life.

I've got to tell you all it's been a pretty busy the last several months for me and I've had a couple of recent releases through Silver Publishing, my most recent being Nico's Fire released on May 12.

It's the Second book in the Elements of Love series and I think it's really quite good even though I must admit Jude ended up being a bit different than I'd first expected him to. That's the funny thing about writing in the way I do. The characters whisper and I write. Often what I first envision of them is something completely different after the are done telling me their stories. This story was a bit like that. I'm really excited about it and I can't wait to hear your comments.

I have begun the next book in this series. It will be titled Gabe's Song. It will be the story of the Water Elemental. I'm really liking the way this story is shaping up. It will be a bit different from the previous two in the instant "mate" relationship is not present, at least not nearly as instantly recognizable as it is with Nico and Adel. This series is taking me on a definite ride and I have to admit I'm really enjoying it.

As for Works in Progress.

I have a number of things that are in the works. I have a cowboy/contemporary story I'm currently working on which I haven't titled yet. There are a number of possibilities floating around in my mind but nothing is really sticking, which is strange for me. Often I have the title of the story within the first few paragraphs, sometimes I have the title before I even start the story. The work is about half way through and I expect it to be ready for submission sometime next year.

I'm still working on Cougar Creek B&B - Cat in the Company of Wolves. This will be a shifter story that has the potential of being a series, but I haven't gotten that far yet. The first book is about halfway completed and I'm hoping to have it ready for submission the early part of next year.

Some of you may have seen Hand of Death. It began as a flash fiction on my blog and it's since become something that I want to expand to a full story, also on my to do list for next year's release.

There's also the next book in the Changing Moon series. I would be keeping an eye out for that one as well. Royal Bind is already scheduled for September and the third book will be coming out next year.

People ask if I know how many books will be in a series when I write them. That's a hard thing to answer because as long as the characters are talking, I'll write them. For instance in the Elements of Love series, I know there will be at least 5 books. One for each element and maybe ... just maybe something for a loved supporting character here and there. For Changing Moon, there will be at least 5 to 7 depending on the characters and the story line.

I've been asked where the idea's come from... My characters come from a number of places. Sometimes it's a photograph, or a place that triggers a character. Sometimes it's a job I see someone doing and a character is born. Sometimes it's something from my own life that triggers a character, something as simple as the memory of the texture of a blanket or how coffee tasted the first time I drank it. Simple reactions and feelings that make up our lives can trigger the creation of a character who may never be more than a supporting character or might be the first in a series.

In the meantime... I hope you all enjoy my stories and I'm always looking forward to hearing from you.

For those of you wanting a sample of Nico's Fire, or any of my books, you can find them on my blog http://suidlynn.blogspot.com/ where you'll find synopsis of each book and an excerpt. You can also find them at the publisher, by clicking on the cover of each book above.

Hop Against Homophobia!

Greetings Loved Ones and Welcome to the Hop Against Homophobia!

There are over 200 M/M Authors involved in showing our support against homophobia and over the next few days in blogs across the web we are talking about our personal fights against homophobia and our support for equality for GLBTQ.

I like many others will be offering a prize for visiting my blog during the HOP. I’ll be giving away 3 of my ebooks, winners chooses the title. All you have to do is comment on my page at the end of the blog to be registered for a copy. The winners will be chosen at random at the end of the hop. Please be sure to include your contact email in the body of the message if you wish to be included in the drawing.

Homophobia is an illogical and hard to understand hatred for me. I can’t say I’ve ever really hated anyone for any reason, at least the kind of hatred that would make someone physically violent. I abhor violence. I’ve had many friends-gay, straight and lesbian-over the years, and met many people in the different places I’ve lived. My feelings for them, those of friendship or dislike, develop because of who they were as people not because of sexual orientation, race, religion or even political party.

I grew up in a small white rural conservative catholic republican community of about 2000 people. To say the words ‘Closed Minded’ is truly putting it lightly. Hatred, be it racial, religious, sexist or whatever only happened on TV. Bullying on the other hand was alive and well, running rampant in the town as the ‘haves’ vs the ‘have nots’ among adults and children alike butted heads in the schools, church and the community in general.

To this day, even having been brought up in such a conservative community, I feel fortunate. My parents, now in their upper 80’s have little or no understanding of other cultures, other than what they see on TV. To give you an idea, my parents still watch reruns of ‘The Laurence Welk show’ on PBS. My father’s favorite past time is watching golf and he refers to anyone not white as a foreigner, even if they are from the US. Still I learned the importance of morality, honesty, and the importance of using good judgment and common sense from these sheltered loving people.

Hatred, whatever form and wherever it stems from, is a choice. People chose to hate. It isn’t something we are born with. We can chose not to hate, not to give in to our ignorance. For where else would such an illogical hatred come from. To me homophobia is as foreign a concept as racism. I don’t understand that hatred either. People are different, and Thank God! If we were all running around looking exactly the same, doing the same thing, believing the same thing, wanting the same things—what a bunch of lemmings we would be. Differences are to be celebrated not feared. Each person on this planet deserves to live their lives without fear of others hating them for something they cannot or even choose not to change, be it religious beliefs, race, height, weight, sex, political view, or dare I say it sexual orientation.

If you don’t like my sexual orientation, religion, race, color of my hair, tattoos or whatever. You have the right to ‘not like it’. You don’t have the right to force me to change because I have just as much a right to be myself as you do. In these days of the new millennium, because I’m a child of the old millennium — I remember our family getting our first color television, rotary telephones, record players, playing outside with friends in the neighborhood until Mom called us-by hollering at the top of her lungs-for us to come in — wouldn’t it be wonderful to be open minded so when history is written we can all say… Yes and at the turn of the century homophobia was abolished from the human condition and humanity went forward with an open mind.

Now for the fun stuff… Just a note on what’s happening in my corner.

Nico’s Fire just released. It’s the second book in the Elements of Love series. You can take a look at the blurb and excerpt from the book by clicking on the page marked Elements of Love on the right. It will give you information about that book and any of my other titles and works in progress, which are listed there and are available for sale from Silver Publishing or Dreamspinner Press.

Don’t forget to leave a comment and your contact information if you wish to participate in the give away and visit the other authors participating in the hop for more chances to win at their sites! Just click on the Hop against Homophobia pic and it will take you to the site showing all the participating authors! Please support the fight against Homophobia. Together we can make a difference and stop the hatred. J

Nico's Fire - Elements of Love 2

Greetings Loved Ones,

I got my cover for Nico's Fire, the second book in the Elements of Love series, and I must say Reese Dante out did herself. I think it's just a fabulous cover and Jude looks hot... in more ways than one. It is currently scheduled for release May 12, 2012 and is ready for pre-sales purchases at Silver Publishing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Here's a sneak peak...

Blurb:
Jude Jamison is a Jesuit Inquisitor, part of the pope’s force of special investigators. He suspects his cover has been blown as he’s been under constant attack. Without the gargoyles his friend Evan sent along as his guardians, and a strange ability to start fires, he’d already be dead.

Nicolai sees a gargoyle circling a smoldering building. He investigates the rare creature and is totally unprepared for the discovery of his human mate, lying amid the rubble. After waiting two millennia to find his mate, fate must be laughing. A human will never survive in his world. Yet he’s unable to leave the beautiful man behind.

Together can the two find a way to survive? Is this love’s first fire?

Excerpt:
Prologue

March 22, 2216—Café courtyard Paris, France. Mid-morning.

"Are you sure you have to go?" Evan picked up his croissant and bit into the flakey pastry.
"He's my boss. When he calls, I go. He did say you and Adel weren't required to come to Rome, in fact it almost sounded like he'd prefer you to remain in France." Jude sipped his espresso. There was nothing quite like a spring morning in Paris to calm the nerves.
"He doesn't like it that I refused to come to Rome. Now he's taking it out on you by making you go to him. Should I be wary of being attacked when you leave?" Evan glanced about the courtyard. There were a few shoppers, but mainly the morning was pleasant and quiet.
"No more than usual. Besides, even he knows with Adel and all the gargoyles of Notre Dame surrounding you, there isn't a safer person in this world," Jude teased.
"I want you to take Fin with you. Regardless of what you think, you need a keeper, Judas Jamison. If nothing else, do it for me so I know you are safe. Take Skye too, because I know he won't be happy if you are gone and he has to stay with us," Evan chuckled at Jude's grimace. "Pout all you want, you can even say no if you like. I'm still sending them with you, so deal with it."
"Fine… whatever you want, oh mighty Elemental. Your word is my command." Jude rolled his eyes, grumbled and sipped more espresso. Although he wanted to be mad at Evan for insisting, he really did like Fin and would appreciate the company.
"Just keep an eye on them while in Rome. I don't want to hear that they were crushed while you were in a meeting with your boss."
"I get it, keep the gargoyles safe. I won't let you down, Evan."
"Really, it's not the gargoyles I'm worried about. I want you to stay safe. You’re my friend, this fire thing is unnerving, and nobody seems to know what's going on with you. I want you to be careful and come back."
"I will." Jude looked down at the table.
"I'm serious. Promise me you'll contact us if you need anything," Evan insisted, reaching over and taking Jude's hand.
Jude looked up, plastering a confident smile on his face. "I promise. If there's anything you can help with, I'll contact you right away. Besides, it's probably going to be a quick trip and I'll be back bugging you about croissants and peanut butter before you know it."
"I like putting peanut butter on my croissants. Especially when they’re hot, the peanut butter just melts all over." Evan grinned, allowing him the subject change even though he must have known Jude's issues were far from settled.
"But you get all sticky," Jude complained. "How can you eat that and still not get all messy?"
"Practice." Evan laughed as Jude just shook his head.

Chapter 1

Elemental Lore
As written by the scribes and entombed in the Church Archives:
To date, the Church has recognized 5 types of Elemental beings:
1)     Earth, being the rarest and least-often born. Only two known in all of Church history.
2)     Air, being the second rarest.
3)     Spirit
4)     Water
5)     Fire, being the most prevalent, most destructive and volatile of all the beings.
No other information is contained in the archive as to their purpose or powers.

July 12, 2216—Present

The distant crunch of tires on gravel should've been alarming, but it wasn't. They'd been on the run practically from the moment they'd left Evan and Adel in France. I hope they're all right. Jude was the eternal worrier. He hadn't had a chance to contact them, to see if they were being hunted as well. At first there just wasn't time, they'd needed to stay ahead of their pursuers—now time had run out. As he lay, broken and bleeding, he prayed that Evan was okay, but exhaustion overrode everything else, and he felt too tired to really care.
Jude's mind wandered aimlessly in a numb, painless haze; he'd expended way too much energy in order to destroy the demons. He thought of Finton—last time he'd seen him, the little sprite had swung his sword and decapitated a vile looking creature, that'd kept coming even without its head. It must've been some sort of zombie. Fin had been defending the entrance, but he'd eventually fallen to their greater numbers. Usually there were just a couple of them, but this time they just kept on coming. Jude couldn't remember where Skye had gotten to; he just prayed the little gargoyle was okay. Evan would have his hide if either one of them had been hurt. So tired. It was becoming a mantra, going round and round in his weary mind.
If only I could pass out. Jude felt as though he was waiting for something—maybe death. That particular entity must be having a busy night since he hasn't come to collect my soul yet. Jude closed his eyes and groaned as something sharp poked him in the back, from the rubble beneath him. His senses registered the pain yet he was so far beyond mere sensation that Jude's mind could barely acknowledge it.
A decidedly masculine voice floated through the fog of Jude's thoughts. It was deep and warm. It made him want to curl up into it and sleep for an eternity. Is this the voice of death? The sound of flapping wings accompanied the voice and a familiar sing-song warble made him want to smile. Ah my Skye, good, he's okay. Jude would know Skye's song anywhere; he was still alive and obviously close by.
"Come on you beautiful bird, this place isn't safe for a gargoyle. You're too young to be on your own." The voice crooned softly. Even in his less than stellar condition, the velvety sound of it touched something deep inside Jude.
"Oh God!" The voice shouted. Jude would've winced if he could've moved. He felt a hand touch his arm and forehead. "What happened?" That touch so—warm and gentle, he felt bathed in the heat of it.
The urge, the desire was primal. A basic instinctual part of himself reached for this other blindly. He wanted to whimper and rub himself against those fingers, but that would take too much effort, although the aching need to do so hurt almost more than his battered body. Jude wanted to answer the voice, but instead he forced open his eyes. He wanted to see the face that belonged to such a melodic voice. His gaze latched onto the most beautiful brown-black eyes Jude had ever seen. He reached up with one hand and touched the man before him; he sighed as peace overwhelmed him for but the fleetest second, before darkness closed around him.

Foxe & Hund : 11

TJ froze. What?! It took everything in his power not to come off with some trite response to the man whose grip had increased, becoming almost brutally painful. What was he supposed to say… should he say anything… should he laugh it off or feign sleep… Well, too late for that, his hand had begun moving again through Zane’s hair.

His emotions were in a turmoil, yet the feel of Zane’s silken hair flowing through his finger, short though it was, relaxed him beyond measure. He sighed softly in the afterglow of his orgasm, the declaration hadn’t really disturbed his bliss overmuch. He knew there was no way he could get out of this unscathed. There was no way he was returning the declaration, not now. He hadn’t even decided how he really felt about Zane. He liked Zane… thought the man was hot as hell. He flipped every single one of TJ’s buttons and could have him wanting with a simple touch. But even TJ knew that was lust, love’s ugly step-cousin.

“I’m sorry… I…” Zane began to pull away from TJ.

“No you don’t. You stay right there and keep holding on. Don’t you dare move.” TJ practically growled, his fists knotting in Zane’s hair, holding him in place. Zane hissed, but his grip around TJ’s waist tightened.

“Okay…” Zane mumbled, shaking his head, rubbing his face into TJ’s groin.

TJ took a deep breath, his fingers petting Zane’s hair as though nothing had happened. “I…I’m not sure what to say, Zane.” TJ looked down to see Zane clutching him with a desperation so touching that he almost capitulated and damned the consequences. The problem would be that it’d be a lie. He wouldn’t lie to Zane; he liked Zane but the “L” word was too much. He refused to utter that before it was true and make it meaningless. With all the relationships and lovers he’d had in the past, he’d yet to declare that word to anyone. With Zane, he could see… could feel the possibilities in the air. He wouldn’t make them meaningless.

“I know I shouldn’t have said it. It isn’t fair of me to expect you to return it.” Zane shook his head again and groaned. “I’ve watched you for so long. I’ve been wanting you for so long it just became this overwhelming part of me. I’ve grown to love you, seeing you every day. How much you care about those you work with and never—never letting the job get to you.”
“Zane… I…”

“No, let me finish.” Zane looked up into TJ’s eyes. “You’re strong. So beautiful, loyal, honest…”

“Stop, you’re making me sound like a Labrador.”

Zane sighed and crawled up the bed. He cupped TJ’s face gently. “I know you can’t love me back. Maybe I can hope you might like me… Maybe you’ll give me a chance to prove how much I love you and you’ll come to care about me too.”

“I do care about you, Zane. I do like you, I always have.”

“Then let me show you how good we can be together.” Zane brushed a hot kiss across TJ’s lips, nipping at his bottom lip then lapping at the burn. Zane rolled TJ under him, straddling his thighs. Pushing himself up and back he sat on his heels. He stripped the navy knit sweater off over his head. TJ’s hands were immediately on his chest, caressing his skin, running over his pecs, down across his stomach and resting on his abs as Zane struggled to undo the buckle on his belt.

TJ brushed his hands out of the way and began working on the belt himself. “Let me unwrap my own present.” He grinned up into Zane’s face. His eyes danced with mischief. Zane was glad that the mood was back, light and fun. He wanted to make this a night TJ’d always remember fondly, not the night he put his foot in it … yet again.

Trembling fingers struggled with his top button, but hesitated on the zipper. Zane’s erection pressed hard against the ziper and with slow care, TJ drew down on the tab, releasing Zane’s cock—he’d gone commando under his jeans—from confinement.

“That boy’s a monster.” TJ’s voice came out in awe as he reached for and held Zane’s engorged shaft in his hand.

“You can handle it. I know you can. We were made for each other.” Zane leaned forward and kissed TJ breathless as he shucked his jeans, kicking them to the floor. “I’m going to be so good to you. But if you want to stop or if I’m hurting you, you have to tell me.” Zane lowered his head to one of TJ’s nipples, laving the nip ‘til it was hard and red under the attention of his teeth and tongue.

“God yes, anything, Zane.” TJ gasped, grinding his hips up against Zane’s as his cock began to revive.

Rudy's Red Nose - Silver's 25 Day's of Christmas

Greetings Loved Ones,

I'm so excited to share that I have a short story coming out for the Christmas Holidays. It is a M/M contemporary romance and part of Silver Publishing's 25 Days of Christmas and due to be released December 3, 2011.

It's called Rudy's Red Nose. This is a light romance, unlike my other works there is no erotica in this story, it's a simple gay romance. I hope you'll enjoy it.

As always, Wishing you Love and Butterflies,

Sui Lynn~~

Blurb:
Austrian exchange student Rudolph Stroh is spending his first Christmas abroad in Missoula, Montana, where he's attending graduate school at Montana State University. With his family thousands of miles away, homesickness and loneliness are
Rudy's only holiday companions.

Benjamin Tinge is a nineteen year old college dropout. A family tragedy left him and his little brother, Tommy, homeless and living in a tent in the park, struggling just to stay warm. Keeping Tommy alive as a blizzard rolls in is all Benji wants for Christmas.

When Rudy discovers the brothers huddled in their tent behind a holiday display, he offers to help. Benji is wary, afraid to trust. Can the two mend each other's hearts as Christmas Eve draws near?

Excerpt:

"I know, Mama, I wish I could come home, too…"

"Yes, I got your care package and the cookies arrived—intact for the most part."

"How's Papa?"

"Tell him to slow down. I want him to still be around when I'm able to come home and visit. That stubborn ol' man will…"

"Sorry, Mama. I wasn't being disrespectful. Just…"

"Yes, Mama. I love you too. Say hi to Victor for me. I sure wish he was here."

"Okay, auf wiedersehen." Rudy Stroh sighed dejectedly. He always missed his family. Talking to them on the phone and receiving their care packages in the mail just didn't stave off the homesickness when the holidays rolled around. Rudy sat in his apartment in Missoula, Montana, moping around, nursing his loneliness. He was an adult, twenty-two years old, for god's sakes; shouldn't he be beyond the age of homesickness? Rudy ran a hand through his blond hair. It was early afternoon, just enough time to get over to the coffee shop for a sandwich and then a walk through the park as the decorations were lit. He needed to catch the bus to make it before the shop closed, but he could take his time walking home.

His friends had all abandoned him for the holidays. Not that he could blame them—he wanted to go home, too. He'd also lost his roommate. Danny had completed his program and returned home… permanently. At least having Danny's things around during previous holiday's had helped to stave off the loneliness with the appearance of others being around. Now Rudy had no such illusions. He was utterly alone.

Unfortunately, as a foreign exchange student, his options were limited. It was expensive to travel back and forth from the US to Austria. He'd expected to be on his own from time to time, but the Christmas semester break was three weeks long, not including the two weeks of finals that he didn't have to take because he'd maintained a 4.0 GPA. He had five weeks of being alone ahead of him, during the most love-filled time of the year, and he didn't relish the thought.

Rudy shrugged on his heavy, navy blue, down-filled winter coat, slid his hands into his knit mittens, and wrapped a matching scarf about his head, then headed out the door. He'd found the quaint coffee and sandwich shop in the neighborhood where his apartment was located shortly after his arrival. During the semester, he'd spent many hours studying there while imbibing cup after cup of coffee. The Daily Grind catered to university students, being close enough to the campus for them to be able to run in and grab a quick coffee to go first thing in the morning and still make classes.

Rudy rushed to the corner and climbed into the bus. He showed the driver his student pass, then took a seat. He hated being so homesick. This wouldn't be happening if his brother hadn't been such an idiot. Victor had let his grades slip the last semester. He was supposed to be in the US attending classes, too. But with his grades not making the cut, he hadn't been allowed to become an exchange student. Rudy was on his own and with an apartment leased for two. Now, with too much time on his hands and five weeks left 'til the new semester began, he was reduced to sullenness and self-pity.

The bus pulled to a stop. Rudy got off, heading down the street to The Daily Grind. He'd found himself spending more time downtown at the coffee shop, watching the people as they went about their holiday preparations, trying to stave off his loneliness by surrounding himself with people.

He took a seat in one of the booths beside the windows, watching the passersby scurry about, laden with packages. From his vantage point, he could vicariously enjoy the hustle and bustle of the families—the smiles on the faces of the children, so full of excitement and hope in eager anticipation of the big day, and the knowing glances of parents who understood and thrilled to their joy. He missed it all so very much. His chest tightened with thoughts of his mother doing her Christmas baking, and oh, the wonderful aromas that must be filling the house even now. He sighed, looking up to find a waiter standing beside his table.

"Hi. What can I get ya?"

"How about the white chocolate mocha?" Rudy glanced up at the young man. He looked a little worn today; dark rings practically encircled his eyes. The young man always held Rudy's eye. Truth be told, the blue-eyed blond was one of the main reasons Rudy kept coming back, beside the coffee being good.

"Sure thing." The waiter moved off to make his drink.

After the first couple of days, he'd begun getting to know the various waiters in the shop. They were cordial enough and lately he'd been tipping more than usual when he left, as a thank-you for allowing him to stay during the day. They always greeted him with a smile, and were sure to keep his coffee hot and flowing.

It was the time after he left the shop—the late afternoons and evenings—that were tiresome. He'd leave the shop and, if it was relatively warm, he'd wander through the park. He loved the park, even with all the couples that were strolling through it this time of year. The city had put out its decorations, and the park was a veritable Winter Wonderland.

"Here you are, sir." The waiter's voice brought Rudy back to the present as he sat his white chocolate mocha beside him. The cup was adorned with red and white candy stripes; whipped cream and sprinkles floated in frothy splendor on top of his beverage.

"Thank you." Rudy tried to smile, but either the waiter didn't notice or he'd failed miserably. The young man rushed off to help someone else, leaving Rudy alone once more.

He remembered last night's trip through the park. The whole Christmas scene made his heart long for someone to love, but he still couldn't resist staring—and hoping. Rudy had sighed as he watched a young couple who’d stood oblivious to the cold in the shelter of the gazebo, gazing deeply into each other's eyes, and shook his head and moved on down the path. On a normal day, the trip through the park took about fifteen minutes. Last night Rudy had lingered for over an hour, wandering amongst the displays, listening to the carolers, and watching the people 'til his nose was ice cold, his fingers and toes having long since gone numb.

Today he felt particularly sad; calling his Mama on the phone hadn't eased the tightening in his chest he always felt when thinking about them.. He just couldn't seem to get around his loneliness.

Even now, sitting in his favorite spot in his favorite coffee shop, instead of the usual peace he felt in watching people, he just felt miserable. Everyone had somewhere to go and something to do—except him. He moped as he sipped his coffee and sucked on the peppermint candy the waiter had brought with the drink. Now even the wait staff were keeping their distance. His mood must be showing, despite his best efforts to keep his misery to himself.
