The Downtown Bus 15 : 05/25/11 - "You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" and/or sitting on a blanket at a beach.

What was that? Daniel awoke with a start. Micah slept, curled contentedly in his arms. It was the first time in days that either of them had truly felt relaxed enough to let down their guards, to really get some sleep. They’d been running, fucking or fighting, practically since they’d first met on the downtown bus. Daniel smiled at the memory of their first conversation. It had been so sweet. He’d known then that Micah was his; his wolf knew it the moment he’d smelled the cat-shifter. Micah had proven to be far more resilient and brave than Daniel had ever guessed. The soft knock sounded again, a little more persistently. It drew Daniel from the bed, but not before he lovingly brushed the hair from Micah’s eyes. He pulled on a pair of sweatpants from his dresser and answered the door to find Maxie gave him a teasing smile and motioned him to follow him out into the lounge.

“What’s up, Maxie?”

“Benjamin wants everyone back in his office. I guess Miss Pansy came through. The Council was enraged when Daniel gave them the information. We need to see if Micah can give us any specifics about where his friends are being kept and what kind of shifters they are.”

“Okay, give us a few minutes.” Daniel yawned. “I’ll wake him and we’ll join you all.”

“Daniel, one more thing. There are some on the council who don’t believe Micah’s a sabertooth. He may have to prove himself to them. Evidently, Leo’s made it sound like you stole the fossilized bones of a saber-shifter, not that he’s been keeping live shifters captive as part of a collection. Although how you’d tell from fossil bones that the… Anyway, some of them are trying to back Leo.”

“Thanks. For the heads up.” Daniel went back into his bedroom and climbed onto the bed. Micah’d begun to fuss a bit in his sleep, but he immediately settled down as Daniel stretched alongside him and wrapped him securely in his arms.

“Hey, sleepy head, time to wake up, Kitten.” Daniel kissed Micah’s jaw and nibbled at his neck.

“Do I have to wake up. I’m having this really great dream.” Micah mumbled.

“Oh and what’s that, lover?” Daniel licked at Micah’s neck and nipped at the scruff of stubble across his chin.

“You and me, Daniel, we’re sitting on a blanket at a beach, soaking up the sun and listening to the sound of the ocean waves, they’re pounding against the shore. The tide’s just starting to come in and the water’s getting closer.” Micah began to purr as Daniel’s hands stroked his hair.

“Sounds really nice, love. Maybe we can go to the beach after all this crap with Leo is done,” Daniel whispered in Micah’s ear.

“I’d really like that.” Micah sighed and opened his big beautiful eyes. “So who was at the door?”

“Maxie came to get us. Ben wants us to join everyone in his office. I guess there are some issues. He warned me that some of the council were led to believe that it’s a fossil of a saber-shifter, not a live shifters that Leo’s held captive. They don’t believe that there are any prehistoric shifters alive anymore. Leo made it sound like we stole a fossil from him.”

“I’m real. There are very few of us, and guys like Leo don’t make it easy.” Micah and Daniel sat up and grabbed clean clothes. Micah borrowed a pair of Daniel’s sweats, which literally hung on him. Even cinching the drawstrings as tightly as possible, he practically drowned in the material. Daniel handed him a t-shirt as well. He’d swim in them, but the clothes were clean and they would be easy to get out of for a shift demonstration, if it should come to that.

Daniel reached back and took Micah’s hand, leading the way through the large house until they arrived in Benjamin’s office.

“Nice of you to join us.” Benjamin’s growl had Daniel rolling his eyes.

“Hey, you be on the run for days and not need a few hours of sleep,” Daniel grumbled back, pulling Micah’s hand to his lips and kissing the knuckles.

The office was full; two members of the shifter’s Council of Elders had arrived with their guards and Benjamin’s men.

“What is the meaning of this, young man? Why are you spouting ridiculous accusations at Leopold the Fae? He’s done wonders for the paranormal community,” the elder scolded.

“I’m not accusing him of anything more than forcing myself and others like me to stay as part of his collection, against our will,” Micah hissed at the elder.

“Leopold is a respected member of this community. He would never participate in something like what you’re describing.” The elder growled.

“My mate doesn’t lie!” Daniel shouted.

“Right, just like he’s a saber-shifter. There are no prehistoric shifters, they’re figments of your aberrant imagination, remnants of children’s stories, nothing more.”

“You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?” Maxie demanded, as he got right up in the elder’s face.

“What?” The elder glared at Maxie.

“I’m asking if you like to live dangerously, Elder Bartlett, because that non-existent prehistoric shifter is about to rip you apart. Personally, I don’t want to be stuck in a room with a fifteen hundred pound insulted sabertooth tiger. Do you?” Maxie laughed almost maniacally as TJ grabbed his arm and pulled him back.

“Son, I wouldn’t worry about it. There’s no such thing….”

A roar pierced the air, interrupting his diatribe as Micah, unable to handle the elder’s behavior any longer, shifted, shoving people, furniture, and one indignant elder out of the way, his tiger taking up most of the space in the now small office.
